Columbia Missourian | Missouri roads are about to become much less safe

“Over the past year, I have been advocating against attempts in Congress to increase semi-truck size and weights on our nation’s highways. As mayor of Moscow Mills and the wife of a truck driver, I have a unique perspective on this issue.

As mayor, it is my duty to ensure that our citizens are protected from any legislation that could pose a threat to public safety and cause more damage to our infrastructure. It is ultimately my responsibility to ensure that we are good stewards of taxpayer dollars and, unfortunately, this legislation does just the opposite.

I am also concerned that the general public is unaware of this legislation. Since this issue impacts the safety and pocketbooks of all Missourians, it is important to voice my concerns publicly, ensuring that everyone is educated on the issue and has the opportunity to voice their concerns as well.

At issue is that some of the nation’s largest shipping companies are pressing Congress to increase allowable truck limits from the current 80,000 pounds to 91,000 pounds and beyond. A key House committee already has approved a proposal to allow much bigger trucks. The measure now heads to the House and Senate.”
