The strongest opponent of bigger trucks is the public. Ordinary motorists are overwhelmingly against higher truck sizes and weights.

A February 2003 national poll concludes that 89% of likely voters oppose allowing triple trailer truck operations, even after hearing arguments for and against the use of triples. Moreover, 73% of those polled disagreed with the trucking industry argument that decisions as to truck size and weight should be left to the states. When voters were asked to select the most persuasive argument in support of or in opposition to triples, 63% cited safety as being the most important concern. Only 2% of those polled believed that lower cost for consumers was more important than safety. The national research firm of Cole Hargrave Snodgrass & Associates conducted the poll.
